Harnessing Control of our Thoughts

September 05, 20254 min read

I have been quite fascinated with where our thoughts come from lately. Why do we get lost in rabbit holes of worry, anxiety, reminiscing (about good or painful things), and the constant chewing of our minds?

I remember hearing a Shaolin master once say that the most important thing we must do is control our minds. I thought this sounded like a very harsh and unfair thing to ask. Logically, this strong push-back doesn’t really make any sense. Why wouldn’t we want to have control over our minds? Why wouldn’t I think, “Oh yes, I’ll start working on that”?

It’s a funny thing.

No Mind & No Thoughts

A few weeks ago, I gave a talk about Verse 71 in The Radiance Sutras (a beautiful book by Lorin Roche, and a translation and interpretation of the tantric text “Vijnana Bhairava Tantra).

Within this talk, we are asked to imagine that we have no mind and no thoughts. What are we left with?

We realize that most of our thoughts are actually vikalpas, Sanskrit for “thought constructs” and that these thought constructs all exist in the past or the future. These thoughts that we are having are not in this present moment at all, and because the past and the future don’t actually exist, these thoughts are actually pure fiction… just a kind of soap opera playing out in our minds.

This threw me back for quite a while. At the time, I was participating in The Artist’s Way book study where each morning you had to write 3 “morning pages” — essentially allowing yourself to “automatic write” for 3 pages each morning to empty your consciousness in order to clear your mind of clutter to make way for creativity.

Once I realized that most of my thoughts were simply vikalpas, I didn’t know what to write each morning. Everything I wanted to write was from the past or a worry about the future. It was all irrelevant. Why was it so hard to write about this present moment?

Creating a New World

Harnessing our thoughts is of the utmost importance as we head into a very new world. Why? Because we are the ones creating this new age of consciousness, ascension, Age of Aquarius, etc. It is not going to simply appear before our eyes. What will manifest here on Earth will be due to the collective actions of all beings alive here on Earth.

And where do these actions come from? Our thoughts.

This new world does not just exist outside of ourselves either. Each one of us is creating a brand-new reality within as well.

Each one of us is on the journey of the butterfly. We were the caterpillar. We went into the chrysalis and dissolved into a puddle of mush.

This is where we are now. We are between worlds — in the mushy part — not knowing which parts to bring forward, which to let go of, and what new realities are yet to show themselves.

They say that the new butterfly is formed from the consciousness that is present in the chrysalis… and what is our consciousness made of? Our thoughts, our wisdom, our deep knowings.

This Week’s Journey

This is a foundational aspect of not only this week’s discussion but really of our entire journey together. Our thoughts are so deeply interwoven into our emotional experiences, our hopes and dreams, our programming and training, and our sense of Self, that we will be touching on this throughout all of our weeks going forward.

I would love to know what thoughts arise for you as you read this and what tools you use to stay aware of your thoughts and not let them go haywire.

A New Facebook Group

Last week, I created a new Facebook group called “Tantra Love & Connection with Katrina Bos”. My intention is to explore shifting our states of consciousness, Tantric philosophy, and taking the journey together into the new world (3D to 5D or however it really is). If you would also like to join the Facebook group and interact with everyone there, here is the link to join
